Sunscreen Photostability
Most sunscreen agents lose their potency as they are exposed to light. They degrade as they absorb the sun. One of the best examples of this phenomenon is avobenzone, better known as Parsol® 1789 – the best UVA absorber in the United States. Sunscreen products with this important active ingredient must be carefully formulated to keep it photostable. Otherwise, the UVA protection disappears quickly when exposed to sunlight.
Gator Gubba Sunscreens are formulated by using advanced stabilizing technology that assures long lasting photostable UV protection.
Certain sunscreen agents react poorly together and their protection potency declines dramatically in the sun. An example of one such combination is octinoxate, a commonly used sunscreen agent, combined with Parsol® 1789. Gator Gubba Sunscreen Lotions do not use this combination. What are the effects of UVA light on skin?
The effect of UVA light on skin was thought to be negligible. However, 95% of the UV radiation reaching the earth's surface consists of UVA, which is known to penetrate deeper than UVB into the epidermis and the dermis. It is now strongly believed that UVA can cause severe long term damage.
Recent studies have shown that chronic exposure to UVA can cause, similar to UVB radiation, structural damage in DNA, skin cells, & cellular proteins, lipids and carbohydrates.
The UVA radiation is divided into two subsets:
UVAII 320 - 340 nm
UVAI 340 - 400 nm
Since the UVA I & UVA II have long wavelenghts, they are able to penetrate deep into the skin's dermis causing damage to the collagen and elastic fibers which give skin its shape, definition and suppleness, thus causing wrinkling and eventually premature skin aging.
What Protects Against UVAI & UVAII Rays?
What are the effects of UVB light on skin?
Because of its short waveband, the UVB light penetrates through the stratum corneum (upper layer of the skin) and into the epidermis.
UVB light is the most active ultraviolet radiation in terms of producing redness (erythema), and therefore, it is called the UVB = burning rays.
UVB radiation significantly deceases the levels of the natural antioxidants (vitamins c & e) in the skin, thus impairing the skin's ability to protect itself against free radicals. Gator Gubba® Sunscreen lotions are infused with many high grade natural antioxidants to replenish the ones lost during sun exposure.
What is Parsol® 1789?
Avobenzone, also known as Parsol® 1789 has been approved for use in the United States since 1997 (and around the world since 1981). Unlike other organic UVA filters currently being used in sun care and skin care, which protect against the shorter wave length UVA II rays (320 - 340 nm) , Parsol® 1789 provides Broad-Spectrum protection throughout the entire spectrum, including the longer wave lenght UVA I (340 - 400 nm).
